Who should be called Mr. Olympia and Ms. Olympia?
There are some titles in the bodybuilding industry that have very prestigious names, such as the Mr. Olympia and Ms. Olympia. Olympia Weekend President, Dan Solomon, and Athletes Representative, Bob Cicherillo, put an end to the confusion.
From its beginnings in 1965, the Mr. Olympia event catered to only one event, the Men’s Bodybuilding event, with the winner being declared Mr. Olympia.
In 1980, the Ms. Olympia was introduced, with the female bodybuilding overall winner being declared Ms. Olympia.
As the sport of bodybuilding and fitness progressed, more division were added to the Olympia Weekend contest line-up, unfortunately watering down the importance of the name Mr. and Ms. Olympia.
As the sport progressed, numerous divisions have been added to the Olympia contest line-up.
212, Classic Physique, Men’s Physique, Wheelchair, Fitness, Figure, Bikini, and Wellness Olympia, all have been included in the Olympia Weekend.
The athletes winning these events, have accomplished an incredible task, winning such a prestigious title, but it seems, they are labeling themselves the wrong title, adding confusion to who is the actual Mr. and Ms. Olympia title holders.
Olympia Weekend President, Dan Solomon, and Athletes Representative, Bob Cicherillo, recently both published a post, explaining who has the right to be called Mr. and Ms. Olympia.
“There are only 17 men who have earned the right to be called MR. OLYMPIA.”
“While champions are crowned each year in various Olympia divisions, ONLY the winner of the MEN’s OPEN division shall be called ‘MR. OLYMPIA’.” – Olympia Weekend President, Dan Solomon.
Athletes Representative, Bob Cicherillo, has been repeating the same thing every year, after witnessing numerous athletes using the name Mr. and Ms. Olympia incorrectly.
“PSA to IFBB Pro OLYMPIA CHAMPIONS: It’s not unusual for me to get real excited as I announce the NEW OLYMPIA champions every year, but please DO NOT use titles you didn’t compete for, or earn”
“The MR. and MS. OLYMPIA titles are specific…the current Champs are Hadi Choopan and Andrea Shaw. Using a MR. or MS. title when you didn’t earn it, is extremely disrespect ful to the REAL champions as well as the history of the Olympia.” – Athletes Rep. Bob Cicherillo.
The prestige of being called Mr. and Ms. Olympia.
As Solomon indicated, there are only 17 winners of the Mr. Olympia, in its 58 year history. Why only 17? Obviously, a number of athletes won the title four, six, seven, and eight consecutive times. Confirming how special this title is.
The same can be said for the Ms. Olympia. Since its introduction in 1980, only 12 women have won the Ms. Olympia title. As with the Men’s event, there have been athletes that have won this title on numerous occasions. Iris Kyle has won the Ms. Olympia ten times.
The Mr. Olympia and Ms. Olympia winners are the only athletes that can label themselves Mr. or Ms. Olympia.
The other winners of various division during the Olympia Weekend, are not Mr. or Ms. Olympia title holders.
For example, the Men’s Physique Olympia winner, cannot say he is Mr. Olympia, he is the Men’s Physique Olympia winner, or Men’s Physique Champion at the Olympia Weekend.
Using the term Mr. or Ms. Olympia before any division winner other than the Mr. Olympia or Ms. Olympia is disrespectful to the winners of a title that has been around since 1965 and 1980 respectfully.
The only winners from the 2022 Olympia Weekend that can be declared Mr. and Ms. Olympia, are Hadi Choopan and Andrea Shaw.
Not to be misunderstood, the winners of all divisions at the Olympia Weekend must be respected, but at the same time, there is only one Mr. Olympia and Ms. Olympia winner each year.
