Boxing legend Marvelous Marvin Hagler dies at 66.
Today is a very sad day for the entire sports world with the news of the passing of Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
Hagler’s wife, Kay Hagler, confirmed on his official Facebook fan page that he passed away suddenly at his home. He was 66 (May 23, 1954 – March 13, 2021). According to reports, Hagler’s son, James, took his father to the hospital earlier in the week as he was having problems breathing and chest pains.
She left a short post about her husband moments after his passing:
I am sorry to make a very sad announcement. Today unfortunately my beloved husband Marvelous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire. Our family requests that you respect our privacy during this difficult time. With love – Kay G. Hagler
Marvin was one of the best boxers in the history of the sport.
He fought the best of the best and fought in some of boxings most memorable bouts.
Hagler took part in 67 fights during his 14-year professional career.
Marvin had a fantastic record of 62 fights, 52 by knockout, while he drew two and lost three times.
Hagler made 12 successful title defences and famously won the classic fight known as ‘The War’, when he beat Thomas ‘Hit Man’ Hearns in April 1985. This was one of the most brutal fights in the history of boxing. The fight only lasted 8 minutes, but it was incredible from start to end.
Hagler fought on boxing’s biggest stages against its biggest names, as he, Leonard, Hearns and Roberto Duran dominated the middleweight classes during a golden time for boxing in the 1980s.
Hagler became the undisputed middleweight champion in 1980 and defended the crown 12 times until his defeat against “Sugar” Ray Leonard in 1987. That was Hagler’s last professional fight, ending his career with a record of 62-3-2 and 52 KOs. In 1993, Hagler was inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He was also selected as the fighter of the decade in the 1980s.
