Five Simple Tips For Walking Long Distances In A Healthy Way

Research stipulates that walking a distance of 5 to 6 miles everyday, is adequate for the maximum health benefits. Yes, 5 to 6 miles!

Of course, most people can barely walk 3 miles without panting or feeling extremely weak, but the truth is that you can walk more miles a day than you think. So, here are a few tips that can greatly help.

  • Start small

It is almost impossible to walk 6 miles at a stretch when you’ve not walked 3 miles at a stretch before. It may happen once or twice, but you surely will not be able to keep up with the routine. So, start small.

Practice walking shorter distances and have this as a routine, before you gradually begin to increase your walking distance. Starting small gives your body enough time to adjust and get used to the new routine. Increasing your distance gradually allows the body to adjust alongside.

When starting out, you do not necessarily have to walk everyday. A 20minutes walk, three to four times a week is perfect for starters. Remember to do your routine at the right time – mornings or evenings.

  • Eat healthy

Yes! Ensure you are eating healthily before thinking of doing a walking routine. Your getting tired quickly might just be as a result of unhealthy eating.

For instance, doing a walk routine, while skipping dinners, or engaging in hunger strikes will lead to quickly wearing out, and inability to cover long distances.

Ensure you eat at the right times, and when you do, ensure you consume a healthy diet: get the right amount of calories and other nutrients as you should. After your morning walks, going for a warm bath and having breakfast should be the activities following.

  • Know your path

Extremely important.

Knowing your walk path is key. You don’t just step out to walk without knowing the path you’re going to cover during your journey. It could be rocky, hilly or smooth. Whichever path will require different energy input, as well as different mental preparation.

Know the path you will journey on before you set out to do so.

  • Stay hydrated

Hydration is key, not just while walking, but in everyday life. Exhaustion can quickly arise from dehydration, and this can even be fatal. When going on your walking trips, ensure to go along with at least a bottle of water.

Additionally, you cannot take all sorts of drinks. Avoid energy drinks or soda, as they impart lots of calories, which in addition to not being healthy, may impact excess energy. With such drinks, you will be able to walk long distances but remember that the goal is to do this naturally, and not by the help of energy drinks.

  • Stay motivated

After knowing what path you’ll journey on, it will help greatly to stay motivated as you progress in your walking journey.

Remember why you’re engaging in this in the first place, or get a walking partner, or choose a scenery path.

Also, listening to music or audios and having chocolate bars to keep you company can greatly help to keep you interested and motivated as you journey on. They can also help you cover more distances than you anticipated you will.

Final Thoughts

There are healthy ways to help stay motivated and cover more distances in our walking journeys, and a few of them have been discussed here. I hope the long read was worth your time?

In addition, do not forget that posture is key and can also influence whether or not you get tired quickly. You should be able to walk without leaning backwards or forwards, and with shoulders relaxed.

It is also important to bear in mind that in order to get the maximum health benefits, the recommended walking distance has to be covered.
