Important Rules and Tips You Should Know Before Getting into Boxing

Important Rules and Tips You Should Know Before Getting into Boxing.

Beginning a boxing class can be a lot of fun. It is challenging in the best of ways but also requires a lot of discipline to follow and succeed. It is a commitment that requires perseverance, especially if you’re looking to turn this into a career. If you are looking at boxing from a fitness perspective, you will certainly get a lot out of a boxing class. You’ll build muscle, endurance, and improve your cardiovascular health. However you choose to start your boxing journey, there are some important rules and tips you should know first. Read on to find out more.

Learn the Fighting Rules and Styles

There are clear fighting rules to follow during boxing and while your instructor will walk you through it all, it’s best to do some research about the general rules and what constitutes disqualification before your first class so you don’t feel overwhelmed. There are also different fighting styles that are incorporated into boxing from the boxer-puncher, out-boxer, slugger, and swarmer. If you have yet to find your niche, don’t worry. You just need to be familiar with them to help you perfect your fighting style. Don’t worry about opponents, you won’t be sparring in the ring on your first day and when you do, boxers are usually paired together based on weight, so you won’t be out of your element with the pros.

You Must Learn Your Stance and Equipment

Your stance is your home base which is what you will frequently revert to. It’s important to know this before heading into your first session as it will be the main focus on your first day. It is the position in which you feel the most comfortable and mobile. You will be prompted to stand with your feet shoulder-length apart, step back with your dominant foot with your back toe turned to face a 45-degree angle as your lead toe faces your opponent. Keep a slight bend in your knees and place your hands overhead. Your thumbs should be wrapped around your knuckles and your elbows should be tucked in as you bring your hands in front of your face and your lead shoulder remains forward. Practicing this stance before your class is going to help a lot.

Moreover, you will want to cover all your bases so, aside from form, make sure you have some knowledge regarding what boxing equipment may be used. Although you won’t be using much equipment as a beginner, it’s still important to know if you plan to up your game and progress.

These tools include wrist straps, boxing shoes, and protective gear. Protective gear is the first equipment you will need to familiarize yourself with before a practice spar session.

Form-Fitting Clothes and Protective Gear Are a Must

The right fitness attire is a must for any exercise class and boxing is no different. Make sure that you wear form-fitting clothes that make it easy to move around freely. You can look into gym wear since the fabric is best to ensure you don’t slip due to sweating. As mentioned above, protective gear is another essential. Even if you aren’t sparring in the beginning, you will still need to begin collecting the appropriate size gear for your form.

You Will Need to Improve Your Fitness

As with any other form of fitness or sport, your physical abilities will grow with time. However, it’s important to understand what the field of boxing will require of your body. Depending on whether you’re aiming for elite or non-elite amateur boxing, you will need to understand the physical conditioning that will be required. Basically, whether you fight sparingly or competitively, the physical activity and workouts will differ. It’s good to explore the realm of boxing and the different physical demands to prepare yourself for your potential career or hobby.

Boxing is Not an Individual Sport

Contrary to popular belief, boxing is in fact a team sport. You may believe since you will be the only one in the ring facing your target that you are in this alone, but that mentality is not going to achieve success. Just like any other sport, you need that team effort to obtain a win. Therefore, understanding that your instructor has knowledge that you need and sees aspects of the match you will fail to see will help you work together. Even if you’re not sparring, a boxing class is even more so a team sport, because you and your opponents are learning these things together. So learning exactly how to create impact whilst protecting yourself in the ring is important. Not only that but in a boxing class, you are usually teamed up with others so that you can all improve as a group.

The physical and mental benefits of boxing are substantial, but like any good sport, the drive, talent, and accomplishment do not come easy. Whether you see yourself becoming an elite or non-elite amateur fighter, or simply want to try this new method of keeping fit, you will need to take boxing seriously. With the right tools, research, and determination, you will not only feel physically and emotionally healthier, but you will also enjoy being a part of the sport.
