Tavi Castro takes a break from competition… not happy with judging criteria.

Tavi Castro, one of the top NPC amateur classic physique athletes has decided to step away from the competition stage.

Training with his mentor, bodybuilding legend Berry DeMey, Tavi has become one of the top NPC Classic Physique athletes who is one step away from earning his IFBB Pro card.

The mission to earn a pro card in such a competitive division is not a easy task.

Tavi placed third at the NPC Worldwide European championships in Spain last weekend.

In a long message on his official Instagram page, Tavi explained that he was very disappointed to find out that his posing routine was not judged during the IFBB Pro qualifier last weekend.

“Right now, the direction that it (bodybuilding) is going is not one I feel I want to be a part of. I was crushed to hear they didn’t even judge my posing routines or presentation in classic physique”
– Tavi Castro.

Tavi believes that to rush the judging process, the decision to not judge posing and presentation is doing more harm to the sport than good.

Even his coach/Mentor, Berry DeMey was not happy about the situation and made it a point to discuss it with the judges and officials.

Classic Physique was created to bring back the legendary physiques from the 1970’s – 1990’s.

During the era of classic bodybuilding, the posing routine was a major part of the presentation of the bodybuilder. A great posing routine was the difference between winning a show or placing second.

Legends such as Ed Corney, Frank Zane, Berry DeMey, Lee Haney, Lee Labrada, Rich Gaspari Shawn Ray, Kevin Levrone, Flex Wheeler, Chris Cormier and many more all presented themselves with fantastic and memorable posing routines.

Having a shredded physique is very important, but if the athlete cannot present his physique properly with a well planned posing routine, he should be penalized.

Classic Bodybuilding is the combination of a well balanced physique with a beautiful posing routine, there is no other way to view this division.

With Berry DeMey by his side, Tavi could not have had a better coach/mentor to get the job done.

In his prime, Berry had some of the best posing routines in the history of the sport. Berry did not have the biggest physique, but his eye for perfection and balance combined with a beautiful posing routine was the perfect package.

Tavi and Berry are in no way putting the NPC in a bad light, but they felt that they had to get their point across.

The simple solution is for the NPC and Pro League to start judging posing routines as part of their judging criteria, especially in Classic Physique.

Tavi Castro’s Message

ROAD TO ART ✖️➕✖️ when I came out of competitive retirement this year to compete again. I did it for a few reasons…I didn’t need it financially (competing actually costs athletes money and it never brought me any business or sponsorships) Nor did I need confirmation from a judging panel to tell me, I have ,or don’t have the best physique on one particular day.The amazing support i receive on social media says enough.

Therefore I had made a goal to reach the Olympia, but I was not attached to it.I didn’t need it. My body, my art. But it was a goal, and it forced me to commit to the iron temple which is a meditation for me, a meditation I needed greatly in one of the toughest years of my life.On this journey me and @berrydemey created so many memories traveling and making new friends and supporters alike. It would be unconscious to not be grateful for this journey so far.But after three rounds of competitions in this sport we saw and heard things we simply didn’t want to…we want to romanticize it and be proud to tell a normal person that we’re bodybuilders, or that a normal person could name the current Mr Olympia instead of naming Arnold Schwarzenegger.

But right now the direction that it is going is not one I feel I want to be a part of. I was crushed to hear they didn’t even judge my posing routines or presentation in classic physique. Many in this niche industry will argue that you just need to follow their criteria, but now I feel that’s that’s why the sport of bodybuilding hasn’t reached its potential. They have exchanged finding the greatest aesthetics and ambassadors to grow the sport, for quicker judging and extremes.

A sport where the revenues are mainly generated by paying athletes, sponsorship money and not by public spectatorship will always suffer. Imagine full stadiums to watch the future Olympians…for now I will step back from competing with full respect to the the competing athletes and NPC .To @yanitayancheva ,my family, my classic dad ,my friends, my followers,I love you. Create your goals, fight for your ambitions. But do not attach yourself to them. Be grateful for now while striving for tommorow. I’ll be back.📸 @tayfun_ayra_timelessmediaart

A year ago @tavicastro and I decided a comeback on stage working together as a team. Tavi and I have almost known each other for 10 years. Friendship, the same interests and ideas have developed in such a way that Tavi calls me “classic dad”. In addition to a personal bond, the gym had a central place for us. A place where we experience training as meditation. Symbolically the classroom where we fused Tavi his contemporary discoveries of his body together with my more than 40 years of experience. Our goal was to create the body that had clear resemblances to the bodybuilding of the years “earlier”. Back to the future with Classic Physique.

Would we have wanted the result of the contest differently? Yes of course. Are we disappointed? No. Life is a wonderful journey that is always in the now. A process where we have had so many beautiful experiences. A journey that never ends. Even empermanence does not affect the meaning of being and the power of this journey. I am grateful to everyone who has come across our path for the development of the process that will continue forever.

Yes, yes… that all sounds good. But of course we still had a lot of questions on our way home. Whether you believe in coincidence or not, the fact was that we sat next to head judge Bill Sibilia on the plane back to Amsterdam. Tavi left, me in the middle Bill on my other side. We sat for two hours listening to each other with respect and understanding. Like all my other friends in the NPC, Bill listened carefully to what we had to say and shared his vision. Thank you for that Bill. This conversation has given everyone new insights and shows that it is often more important to try to understand someone before you want to be understood. For sure it helped us to make decisions and plan what we will do next. I have faith in the future. Life is beautiful.
