The Evolution of the Mr. America Contest – 83 years of bodybuilding history.
In the world of bodybuilding as a sport, the Mr. America contest, stands out as one of the most prestigious in the history of the sport.
With the first contest being organized in 1939, the Mr. America event has been around for just over 83 years, and it has been re-launched into a massive event for 2022.
The Mr. America event has been organized by a number of federations, during it long and eventful history.
The Evolution of the Mr. America Contest
Both the AAU and the IFBB fought for the bragging rights over this event, but they both managed to organize this event, even simultaneously. The AAU sanctioned the majority of events from 1939 to 1999, while the IFBB sanctioned this event in 1949 and 1959 to 1977.
From 1999 to 2016, a number of other federations sanctioned the event, the NGA, NSL and UFE. The event was not organized from 2017 to 2019.
From 1939 to 1999, some of the most popular bodybuilders in the history of the sport have competed and won the Mr. America title. To mention a few, Steve Reeves, John Grimek, Bill Pearl, Boer Coe, Dennis Tinerino, Chris Dickerson, Casey Viator, Frank Zane, Ken Waller, Ed Corney, Lou Ferrigno, Robby Robinson, Mike Metzer and Danny Padilla.
The Mr. America Sports Festival and Expo
Finally the event was reborn in 2020, under the watchful eye of Marc Tauriello. Marc not only brought the Mr. America back to life, but the event expanded to the Mr. America Sports Festival and Expo.
Marc Tauriello, successfully organized this event in 2020 and 2021, with everything in motion for the big event in 2022.
The new version of the Mr. America Sports Festival and Expo is not sanctioned by any federation and it’s a drug tested event.
The majority of athletes that compete at the Mr. America have more of the athletic look, but at the same time, represent classic bodybuilding.
While some of the bodybuilding’s biggest competitions are still struggling to get TV coverage, the Mr. America event is broadcasted on the CBS Sports Network.
The new version of the Mr. America contest is also endorsed by the legendary Mike O’Hearn and other prominent bodybuilding legends.
