In the last few weeks, bodybuilding and fitness coaches have come under fire, with the death of a young athlete.
Coaches will always be in the spotlight when something bad happens to an athlete, but federations will also be asked questions related to the athlete’s death or injury.
Until a few days before publishing this article, the NPC/Pro League had never requested coaches to be certified.
Rafael Santonja’s IFBB is a different story. They have been certifying coaches for a number of years now and offer several intense coaching courses.
The NPC/Pro has been in the spotlight again after the recent death of Jadi Vance, and President Jim Manion and Vice-President Tyler Manion have finally decided it was time to make sure coaches are properly certified.
There have been a large number of deaths in recent years, and several have been allegedly related to certain decisions made by the coach.
Until now, the coach and the NPC/Pro League have always walked away unscathed, but how long will this last before somebody is thrown into jail?
NPC/Pro League collaborates with NASM International
NPC/Pro League Vice-President, Tyler Manion, has just announced a new collaboration between the NPC/Pro League and NASM International.
This new collaboration will be available to coaches residing in the USA and Canada.
National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) offers world-class certifications and advanced specializations for fitness and wellness professionals.
The new goal for coaches requested to be certified, is to give athletes the peace of mind when it comes to choosing a coach, knowing they will be certified, and take responsibility for their work.
With athletes and coaches crossing the line, it was only a matter of time before the NPC/Pro League had to take action and safeguard their athletes.
Will the current coaches have to be certified?
Will the current coaches need to earn their qualification with NASM to continue coaching within the NPC/Pro League?
Several of the world’s best coaches work with the NPC/Pro League, but some have no certification, just experience.
The new collaboration with NASM is a great idea. Still, it will only work if the NPC/Pro League forces coaches to get certification, and educates athletes to use the options they made available.
If something goes wrong with an athlete, and they are working with a NASM certified coach, this will give the NPC/Pro League the power to investigate.
If an athlete still decides to work with a coach that’s not certified, and they are injured due to the coach’s instructions, the NPC/Pro League cannot be held responsible.
This is a move in the right direction, and hats off to Jim and Tyler Manion for moving ahead with this idea.
