WATCH: The battles at the 2001 Mr. Olympia Press Conference.
The 2001 Mr. Olympia press conference is the perfect example of how it should be done.
The press conference was led by the former promoter of the Mr. Olympia, Wayne DeMilia.
Wayne had to handle positive and negative comments from the athletes, press and fans just like the athletes he works with.
This is something you never see today at the Mr. Olympia press conference.
Imagine watching Dan Solomon on center stage getting grilled by the athletes and press. We believe Dan would handle it very well as it would add that little bit more excitement to the event.
Shawn Ray, Ronnie Coleman, Craig Titus, King Kamal, Kevin Levrone and other athletes all had something to say either to each other or about the sport in general.
Shawn Ray was fighting for the rights of the athletes. From the way they are judged to prize money, Shawn did not hide anything on that evening.
Crag Titus and King Kamal showed the world how much they really hated each other with their harsh comments towards each other.
The press conferences in the 2000’s were special. It gave the opportunity for athletes to vent their frustration regarding the federation or against other athletes.
There would be moments when it would get very tense and as well very funny.
The athletes wearing suits is also missing from the modern day Mr. Olympia press conference. It was great to see all the athletes dressed up in their over-sized suites, it showed great character.
Today’s press conferences have literally turned into a love affair. It all went dead after the bust up between Phil Heath and Kai Greene at the 2014 Mr. Olympia press conference.
At the 2019 Mr. Olympia press conference, there was no excitement on the panel. It was just a bunch of bodybuilders saying how much they respect each other and are glad to be at the Olympia.
The press conference is the chance for the athletes to vent their frustrations in a calm manner towards each other. It is their chance to raise controversial subjects for the organizers and judges.
There was a time when Dan Solomon and Bob Cicherillo used to ask the questions at the Mr. Olympia press conference. Dan and Bob had a weekly bodybuilding radio show at the time, and they used to play back the comments during the press conferences to contradict what the athlete in question was saying about another athlete. This was perfect to add excitement to the press conference.
The subject of how boring the 2019 Mr. Olympia press conference was raised on a number of occasions when the event was over.
The organizers surely have taken note and the fans can expect a more exciting press conference for the 2020 Olympia Weekend.
